The 1920s gangster wearing a black pinstripe suit was one perpetuated by Hollywood in the 1940s and 1950s. Wealthy bootleggers and gangsters in the 1920s would have been impeccably dressed in the latest suit fashions, imported from Europe and tailored to a perfect fit.
These suits were single-or-double-breasted with three or four buttons up the front. When suitcoats were buttoned, only a tiny part of the white dress shirt and necktie were visible. Recently, I dressed in a 1920s silent movie star/gypsy/ fortune teller costume for an evening party. Keep the look dark and mysterious by wearing your hair long and curly for this non-flapper outfit. Working class men didn’t have the luxury of custom suits. Instead, they wore overalls or blue jeans with a cotton button-down shirt and canvas coat.
